Practice Philosophy
Architecture is a practice of possibility, collaboration and constraint. We balance clients’ ambitions with the detailed realities needed to achieve them, reconciling public and private needs, social responsibility and commercial viability, creativity and limits of time, cost and quality. Constraints spur questions, challenge convention and drive innovation.
Buildings belong to larger contexts — landscape, city, neighbourhood, cultural history — so we begin by understanding each site's nuances and its people. Design requires empathy: stepping beyond our own perspective to grasp how others experience the world, enabling spaces that resonate.
Our approach, refined over decades, is rooted in rigour and empathy. We treat architecture as a pragmatic art that responds to the past, engages the present and anticipates the future, meeting need and aspiration.
Design Approach
D&A Architects was started in 1970, by Ivor Daniel as Daniel & Associate Architects.
The practice grew through amalgamation with SVA into the development of a national and international practice, returning to Daniel & Associate Architects in 2008. Through this period, the practice was involved in a wide variety of project types, both local and internationally.
Strong and active associations with other practices and individual architects have been a dynamic driver of growth within the Daniel & Partners practice, with the retention of a core group of talented young architects maintaining continuity and enthusiasm for architecture. By balancing experience and youthful dynamism, the practice has a broad-based vision developed on the varied experiences and creative pragmatism of its members.
The practice operates from studios in Cowies Hill (Durban) and Simondium (Western Cape).

IVOR DANIEL
Principal Partner
University of Natal B. Arch graduate. Started practice in Durban in 1970. Amalgamated with Stauch Vorster Architects in 1985 as managing director of the Durban office and national director of Design & Marketing. Established offshore offices in Dubai and Maputo. Restarted practising as Daniel & Partners Architects in 2008, returning to direct involvement in projects and providing strategic leadership across a wide range of projects.
Architectural concerns include critical regionalism, sustainability, conservation and environmental appropriateness.
Past President of the KZN Institute of Architects 2006 - 2007 (awarded a Scroll of Honour in 2014)
Recipient of numerous project awards including the SAIA Award of Excellence & Merit
Served on SAIA’s Executive & various portfolio committees
Member of various Design Review Boards in architecture and urban design management.
Chairman of various community structures including the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust since 1997.

Rhodes University, Red & Yellow and Unisa graduate. SACAP Candidacy Programme graduate - awarded first place nationally in both professional practice exams. Started practice, founding Path Architecture. Amalgamated with Daniel & Partners Architects, becoming a partner and establishing a Cape office for the practice. Director of Daniel & Partners Architects, leading all Cape-based projects.
Architectural philosophy proposes an approach directed by empathy towards the context, site, function and user of a building to create architecture that has emotional meaning and value.
