The Bank of Mauritius Training Centre in Floréal was developed as a multi-functional educational and conference facility incorporating training venues, catering amenities, recreational spaces and an off-site banking computer facility. The project sought to create a low-energy institutional environment responsive to the tropical climate while reflecting elements of traditional Mauritian architectural identity.
The principal challenge was designing a complex capable of accommodating technologically sensitive functions and large gathering spaces within a hot, humid environment where thermal comfort and energy efficiency were critical. The building needed to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces while minimising reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
The design adopted the metaphor of the “parasol” umbrella, drawing inspiration from traditional Mauritian roof forms that provide shade and encourage natural air movement. A central parasol roof shelters the primary meeting and conference spaces, while support facilities are arranged around it within landscaped courtyards and open circulation zones. Passive environmental principles informed the building’s orientation, solar screening, daylighting, natural ventilation and insulated wall and roof systems.
The completed centre provides a climate-responsive institutional environment that balances technology, learning and recreation within a cohesive tropical architectural language. Its integrated passive design strategies create comfortable and energy-efficient spaces while reinforcing a strong connection between building, landscape and climate.
