The House Bank of Bahrain is a competition entry for a new energy-efficient banking headquarters, responding to the region’s hot, arid climate and the increasing demand for environmentally responsible commercial buildings. The proposal defines a contemporary financial institution that balances operational efficiency, passive environmental performance, and a strong civic architectural identity.
The primary challenge is reducing solar heat gain and overall energy consumption in an extreme climatic context while maintaining a clear, efficient banking layout. The design also responds to orientation, prevailing winds, and cultural expectations of solidity and transparency in civic architecture.
The proposal adopts a compact rectangular plan optimised for orientation and natural ventilation, using prevailing winds and stack-effect principles to drive passive airflow. A north-facing solar screen and adjacent atrium moderate light and heat while introducing daylight deep into the interior. The façade combines solid and transparent elements in a balanced composition, referencing traditional Bahraini architectural language through screens, shaded openings, and layered material expression. The result is a climate-responsive banking building that integrates passive environmental systems with cultural continuity and a reduced energy demand, expressing a contemporary regional architectural identity.
