The Pixley Seme Hall at Mangosuthu University of Technology was developed as a major multi-purpose venue supporting both the university’s growing student population and its broader community outreach initiatives. Conceived as a central component of the Community Centre precinct, the hall was designed to accommodate graduations, examinations, sporting activities, religious gatherings and large civic events within a single adaptable space.
The challenge was to create a highly flexible venue capable of supporting diverse academic and community functions while maintaining continuity with the architectural language established by earlier teaching and administrative buildings on the campus. The scale of the hall also required careful consideration of circulation, daylighting and spectator accommodation.
The design adopted a flat-floor hall configuration to maximise flexibility, complemented by raked spectator seating positioned on tiered first-floor platforms. Retractable rear walls allow the foyer and hall spaces to merge with the large glazed southern façade, creating a strong connection between interior and exterior gathering spaces. Integrated triangular south-facing roof lights and high-level side glazing introduce controlled natural daylight into the large-volume interior.
The completed hall provides a versatile civic and institutional venue that strengthens the university’s relationship with the surrounding community. Its adaptable planning, generous public spaces and carefully controlled natural lighting support a broad range of academic, cultural and social activities throughout the year.
