The Mangosuthu University of Technology Resource Centre extension was developed to improve access, security and circulation to the university’s existing independent resource centre building on the south-east edge of the campus. The project introduced a new entrance foyer and security control point while creating a stronger physical and social connection between the resource centre and the surrounding academic precinct.

The primary challenge was accommodating the new entrance and security functions within a constrained site already occupied by a circular lecture theatre complex below. The intervention also needed to function as both a practical sound-lock to the resource centre and a significant gathering space for campus users.

The design introduced a lightweight steel-framed foyer structure elevated above the existing lecture theatre, with the theatre roof forming the floor plane of the new entrance level. A glazed pyramidal wall enclosure and steel-sheeted roof supported on exposed bow trusses established a clear and expressive architectural identity while maximising transparency and natural light. The new structure acts as a linking element between buildings while reinforcing campus circulation patterns.

The completed project provides a welcoming and highly visible campus gathering space that improves access, security and connectivity to the resource centre. Its lightweight structural expression and transparent enclosure create a contemporary institutional landmark within the university environment.
