The Gateway Hotel at Gateway Theatre of Shopping is located on the prominent north-west corner of Centenary Boulevard and Twilight Drive, where it was conceived as an urban marker within the broader Gateway precinct. The project sought to define the corner condition of the site while establishing a clear and legible arrival point to the hotel within a highly active mixed-use environment.
A key challenge was the building’s integration into the existing commercial fabric of the Gateway precinct, where it had to respond both to the intensity of the surrounding urban edges and the quieter interface with the adjacent shopping centre and restaurant zones. The hotel also needed to manage strong solar exposure while maintaining a coherent architectural identity across varying orientations and programmatic demands.
The design responds through a strong formal expression anchored by a perforated solar screen that wraps the primary façades, providing environmental protection while defining the building’s visual identity. The north-west elevation addresses the street edge with a double-loaded room configuration, while the curved corner accommodates more private deluxe rooms along a single-loaded corridor. Internally, triple-volume atria break down the length of the bedroom wings and introduce natural light into circulation spaces, reinforcing orientation and spatial clarity.
The completed building accommodates 146 rooms alongside extensive conferencing, dining, and leisure facilities, including a roof-level pool deck with views over the precinct and the Indian Ocean. It establishes a contemporary hotel environment defined by environmental responsiveness, urban integration, and a clear architectural language of light, screening, and spatial connection.
