Datcentre

1980
Pinetown, KwaZulu Natal

Team: Ivor Daniel, Mario Farinha

Datcentre was conceived as a motor dealership facility within Pinetown’s main street, combining new and used vehicle sales with servicing and workshop functions on a constrained urban site. The project required strong public visibility for showroom vehicles while maintaining clear operational separation between sales, servicing and customer circulation areas.

The challenge was to accommodate multiple vehicle-related functions across varying site levels while creating a prominent street presence within a dense commercial environment. The building needed to balance accessibility, visibility and efficient movement of vehicles without compromising the clarity of the overall architectural expression.

The architecture responded through a clear separation of spatial functions. New vehicle showrooms were positioned prominently at pavement level within a glazed triangular enclosure angled toward the street beneath an exposed space-frame roof. A column-free showroom structure with projecting external sun louvres addressed solar control while maintaining transparency and visibility. Used vehicle sales were accommodated within a lower paved forecourt, while servicing workshops were accessed independently via a ramped driveway to the rear lower level.

The completed building presents a direct and functional architectural response that clearly expresses its operational requirements. Distinct circulation systems and layered spatial organisation create an efficient dealership environment while establishing a bold and recognisable commercial presence within the streetscape.
