Perched on the upper slopes of Paarl Mountain, House Molenaar was designed for a young family seeking a home that could adapt over time while taking full advantage of its elevated setting. The site offered expansive views across Paarl and towards the Hottentots Holland Mountains, presenting an opportunity to create a family home closely connected to its landscape.
The steep terrain and limited side access posed significant challenges, requiring a carefully considered approach to site circulation, retaining structures, and the creation of usable building platforms. The design responds by stepping with the topography, using the architecture itself to negotiate the slope while establishing a series of interconnected indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Drawing on the character of the Cape landscape, the house is defined by white face brickwork, articulated retaining walls, corbelled detailing, external sliding shutters and a prominent chimney that anchors the composition. The main living level is suspended above an open entrance and parking level, with split-level family spaces linking separate bedroom wings and extending onto a protected outdoor terrace and swimming pool. The success of the design is reflected in its longevity, serving as the same family’s home for more than fifty years.
