Polyfoil Packaging required a highly adaptable industrial facility for the manufacture of polyethylene bags, capable of accommodating future changes in production processes and long-term expansion. The core of the brief called for a large, uninterrupted production floor that could easily reconfigure over time. It also required carefully managed air movement across the manufacturing area, whilst integrating administrative offices and staff facilities within a cohesive architectural language.
The main challenge lay in achieving a 2,500-square-metre internal volume completely free of internal columns, which demanded significant structural spans and height. The design needed to maintain total flexibility in both the enclosure system and the mechanical servicing. Furthermore, the building had to anticipate future extension on the site without disrupting ongoing daily manufacturing operations, requiring a highly adaptable framework that could grow over time.
To address these structural constraints, the building is designed as a lightweight, high-volume industrial box utilising a steel frame with perimeter-only columns. A flexible enclosure system combines prefabricated glass reinforced concrete panels, profiled sheeting, and continuous high-level glazing to allow sunlight into the deep floor plate. External louvres extend from the roof profile to manage light, while the mechanical plant is separated entirely from the primary building fabric to preserve the adaptability of the internal space.
The completed building delivers a clear-span production environment that supports daily operational efficiency while remaining inherently flexible for future reconfiguration. The lightweight concrete skin unifies the factory, offices, and staff spaces into a coherent industrial form. Inside, the space feels connected to the outside through the high-level glazing, creating a well-lit work environment that meets current manufacturing needs while effortlessly accommodating the future growth of the company.
