The Bahrain International Convention Centre was commissioned by the Government of Bahrain in 2001 as a landmark venue for the 2003 Arab League Summit. The project required a world-class convention facility capable of accommodating large international gatherings while projecting Bahrain’s identity on a global stage.

The challenge is to create a highly functional, technologically advanced, and flexible convention centre without relying on a generic international architectural language. The building must meet the complex operational demands of a contemporary events venue while expressing a strong sense of place within the cultural and environmental context of the Islamic world.

The design draws inspiration from the traditional Bahraini sailing vessel, reinterpreting this historic form through a contemporary architectural language. Modern construction and event infrastructure are combined with references to Bahrain’s maritime heritage, creating a distinctive identity rooted in local culture while remaining forward-looking.

The proposal establishes a recognisable civic landmark that balances international standards with regional character. By integrating cultural symbolism, environmental awareness, and operational flexibility, the design creates a convention centre capable of hosting major global events while reflecting the heritage and aspirations of Bahrain.
