Designed in association with Barry J Clark, the Austerville Methodist Church was conceived as an extension to an existing community hall, providing a new liturgical space while strengthening the broader social and spiritual role of the church within the community. The project sought to create a place of worship that respected the modest character of the original structure while establishing a renewed architectural identity.
The challenge lay in integrating a contemporary church building with the existing humble face brick hall without diminishing the significance of either structure. The design needed to balance ceremonial requirements with community functions while fostering a strong sense of ownership and belonging among congregants.
The architectural response centred around a concrete tower marking the intersection between community and liturgical spaces. An angular plan organised around a central spine created movement through the building, while a floating concrete-framed roof canopy remained visually separated from the enclosing brick walls through continuous glazing. Freestanding brick panels grounded the building within its existing context while allowing light and openness to define the interior experience.
The completed church established a renewed civic and spiritual presence for the Austerville community. The integration of old and new architecture reinforced continuity and collective identity, creating a welcoming and uplifting environment for worship, gathering and community life.
