The Umhlanga Lifesaving Club was designed as a robust, sustainable facility for its exposed coastal setting, providing refuge and a strategic vantage point for lifesavers. The design responds to harsh sea spray, strong winds, and storm surges through durable materials, structural resilience, and reduced energy demand.

Enhancements to the original design focus on extending the building’s lifespan by improving material specifications, structural detailing, and maintenance performance. The building is raised above the adjacent promenade to prevent stormwater ingress while maintaining accessible pedestrian entry. The façade retains the original architectural character, incorporating Black Satin brickwork, marine-grade concrete detailing, and specialist-approved materials suited to the coastal environment.

Landscaped roofs are designed to drain efficiently, with harvested rainwater reused for boat washing, irrigation, and landscape maintenance. Wide roof overhangs, external louvres, clerestory windows, and passive ventilation provide effective solar control and natural cooling, eliminating the need for mechanical air conditioning.

Internally, an open-plan, double-volume function space forms the heart of the club, while service areas are positioned to maximise sea views and operational efficiency.
