Designed for a retired client who wished to accommodate visiting and returning family members, the residence was conceived as a home that balanced privacy with generous shared living spaces. Equally important was the desire to strengthen the relationship between indoor and outdoor amenities, allowing everyday life to extend into the surrounding landscape.
The site occupies an elevated position on a mountainside overlooking the Umzimvubu River, within a dramatic subtropical setting. While the views were exceptional, the exposed location required careful consideration of prevailing winds moving both up the river valley and down the leeward slopes of the mountain.
The architectural response establishes a strong presence within this expansive landscape through a cascading form that follows the natural topography. A series of interconnected levels organise the accommodation, with the upper floor containing the principal living areas, entrance and main bedroom suite, all opening onto terraces oriented towards the views. Below, an informal family room and additional bedrooms connect to a continuous colonnaded verandah. White-painted fair-face brickwork, timber shutters, terracotta roof tiles and prominent chimneys create a cohesive architectural language that is both robust and regionally responsive.
