The Mangosuthu University of Technology Resource Centre extension was developed to improve access, security, and circulation to the existing resource centre on the south-east edge of the campus. The project introduced a new entrance foyer and security checkpoint while strengthening physical and social connections with the surrounding academic precinct.
The primary challenge was accommodating the new entrance and security functions on a constrained site above an existing circular lecture theatre. The intervention also needed to serve as both a practical sound lock for the resource centre and a welcoming gathering space for students and staff.
The design features a lightweight steel-framed foyer elevated above the lecture theatre, with the theatre roof forming the floor of the new entrance level. A glazed pyramidal enclosure and steel-sheeted roof supported by exposed bow trusses create a distinctive architectural identity while maximising transparency and natural light. The new structure links surrounding buildings and reinforces campus circulation.
The completed project provides a highly visible and inviting campus landmark, improving access, security, and connectivity while creating a contemporary and engaging entrance to the resource centre.
