The South Beach Facility in Durban incorporated the restoration and adaptive reuse of the original 1935 public change-room and lifesaver building, alongside new infrastructure for beach management, first aid, offices, and retail. The project formed part of the Durban Beachfront redevelopment scheme of 1984, addressing an urgent shortage of beachfront amenities for an expanding visitor demographic while preserving the coastal character.
The primary challenge involved integrating new architectural additions within a sensitive heritage structure and a busy civic setting. The design also needed to accommodate complex pedestrian movement and seamless transition between the continuous beachfront promenade and lower Marine Parade.
The structural solution adds a low-slung, semi-circular pavilion form that curves behind the original art deco fabric, ensuring that the historical building remains legible. A deep, overhanging roof plane creates a shaded veranda that links old and new structures, while newly introduced glass-brick walls allow natural light into internal changing blocks. The resulting configuration balances heritage conservation with contemporary public spaces that support a high-density coastal environment.
